greta thunberg Biography
Early Life
Greta Thunberg was born in Sweden on January 3, 2003. She had a normal childhood, but then at age 11, she fell into depression. She stopped eating and speaking because she learned about the terrible impacts of climate change. She later said in a TED talk, this made her really upset. As a result, she was diagnosed with Autism - which she now has said is her "super power".
Activism
At age 15, she started spending one school day a week (Fridays) outside the Swedish Parliament to call for stronger action on climate change by holding up a sign reading “Skolstrejk för klimatet,” which in English means School strike for the climate. Greta wanted to help so badly so nothing happens in the future. She said she would continue to skip school on Fridays until the Swedish government met the carbon emissions target agreed by world leaders in the Paris Agreement of 2015. By December 2018, more than 20,000 students around the world had joined her in countries including Australia, the UK, Belgium, the US. Through her activism she also decided to become vegan, she stopped buying new things and she refuses to travel in airplanes all because of the terrible impact these things have on the environment. On 25 January, 2020 Greta Thunberg gave a famous speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos. She warned the global leaders that "I don't want you to be hopeful.”
